Alamance County to Hold Aug. 17 Hearing on Possible Data Center Moratorium

Alamance County commissioners are scheduled to hold a public hearing Monday, Aug. 17, on whether to temporarily pause new data center applications in unincorporated parts of the county.

The hearing is set for 7 p.m. at the Historic Court House in Graham. Local reporting says commissioners agreed to seek public input while county officials consider what rules may be needed for future data center development.

The discussion comes as communities across the Triad and North Carolina weigh concerns about large data centers, including electricity demand, water use, traffic, noise and land-use impacts. Greensboro recently rejected a proposed moratorium, while other nearby jurisdictions have considered or adopted temporary pauses.

Commissioners have not committed to a specific moratorium length. The Aug. 17 hearing is expected to help shape whether the county moves forward with a temporary pause while regulations are studied.
