WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police are asking for help identifying a driver who left the scene after striking a juvenile riding an electric scooter Sunday night. The juvenile suffered life-threatening injuries.
Officers responded around 8:19 p.m. Sunday to Vargrave Street near Mock Street after receiving a report of a hit-and-run crash, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department. They found the injured juvenile in the roadway, and an e-scooter was located a short distance away.
Investigators believe the juvenile was riding north on Vargrave Street when a vehicle traveling in the same direction struck the rider and scooter. The driver did not remain at the scene, police said.
Emergency personnel transported the juvenile to a local hospital. Authorities described the injuries as life-threatening but did not release an updated medical condition in the Monday report. The juvenile's identity was not released.
Police have not announced a suspect, vehicle description or arrest. The Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating, and investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact the department.
Anyone with information can call Winston-Salem police at 336-773-7700 or Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800. Spanish-language tips can be directed to 336-728-3904. Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous tips.
Police also offer a text-tip line at 336-276-1717 for information, photographs or video, though those text messages are not anonymous. Investigators have not said whether nearby cameras captured the incident.
The collision raises immediate concerns about road safety for riders of smaller personal mobility devices, particularly after dark. The specific cause and any possible violations remain under investigation, and police have not released findings assigning fault beyond their account that the vehicle struck the scooter and left.
