The North Carolina Department of Transportation is opening the final sections of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway, completing a major connection between I-40 and I-74 in Forsyth County. NCDOT says the newly completed projects span about three miles and represent roughly $387 million in infrastructure investment. The work includes 12 new bridge structures, a diverging diamond interchange at Kernersville Road, nine culverts and five sound barriers. Crews also widened 2.8 miles of I-40 to three lanes in each direction and widened and resurfaced two miles of N.C. 192. NCDOT says the completed corridor is designed to provide a direct bypass around downtown Winston-Salem, reduce congestion and travel time, improve regional mobility and safety, and support economic growth along the U.S. 52, U.S. 421, I-40 and I-74 corridors.
