WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem is expanding heat-relief measures for three days as another stretch of dangerous late-summer temperatures moves into the Triad.
The City of Winston-Salem says temperatures are forecast to climb above 95 degrees with high humidity from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Thursday, Sept. 3. With heat indices expected to exceed 100 degrees, the Winston-Salem Transit Authority will offer fare-free fixed-route bus service throughout each service day during the three-day period.
The free service is intended to help residents reach indoor cooling locations. City recreation centers will serve as cooling sites during their normal business hours, and officials are encouraging residents to limit prolonged outdoor exposure, stay hydrated and use indoor air-conditioned spaces when possible.
WSTA says the extreme-heat program is activated when qualifying temperature and heat-index thresholds are met and formally authorized. Riders should check official transit channels for route information and any service updates.
