WINSTON-SALEM — The Bethesda Center for the Homeless says it expects to temporarily suspend its emergency shelter operation beginning October 25, with roughly 100 people affected. The organization attributes the decision to financial and operational pressures that have made its current around-the-clock shelter model unsustainable.

The potential loss of shelter beds is particularly significant for Forsyth County because Bethesda serves single adults experiencing homelessness and, according to the center, operates the county's only emergency shelter for single adult women. People who rely on the facility may need alternative arrangements in less than two weeks. Leaders said the transition could happen sooner than October 25, making the timeline especially urgent.

Executive Director Amanda Burton characterized the move as an effort to stabilize the organization rather than abandon its mission. The center has engaged an outside consultant to help assess its operations and future options. It has not committed to a date for reopening the emergency shelter, saying any restart will depend on financial and operating conditions.

Some services are expected to continue. Those include case management by appointment, scheduled on-site medical clinic visits, referrals and connections to partner agencies. The organization also expects to retain a limited presence for mail, communication and administrative functions.

The immediate concern for service providers is how to prevent disruption for people already using the shelter, particularly women who may have fewer dedicated emergency options. Bethesda says it is coordinating with community partners and local stakeholders to connect people with available resources. No complete replacement-bed plan was announced in the reporting available Tuesday.

The broader question is whether local funding and partner support can sustain shelter capacity through colder months. TTN News will track any changes to the proposed October 25 date, the number of people relocated and the center's plan for restoring overnight services.
