North Carolina voters are turning out in substantially greater numbers during the opening days of the 2026 general-election early-voting period than they did at the comparable point in the 2022 midterms. Reporting published Monday, October 19, by WFDD and WUNC cites roughly 486,000 in-person early ballots cast since October 15, about 50 percent more than at the same point four years ago.
The totals provide an early indication of participation, but they do not reveal which candidates voters selected. Party registration, demographic information and ballot volume can help describe the electorate; they cannot be translated directly into election outcomes. Registered Democrats account for nearly half of ballots cast so far when absentee ballots are included, with unaffiliated voters representing nearly 35 percent and Republicans about one-fifth.
Another October 19 report by WBTV, citing state election data from an earlier Sunday-morning snapshot, put the total at 501,321 ballots, including 461,048 cast in person. The different counts reflect reporting cutoffs and the categories being measured; they should not be treated as contradictory final totals.
The state's early-voting period continues through Saturday, October 31. The North Carolina State Board of Elections says the final day ends at 3 p.m. Voters should use official state or county election resources to verify sites, hours, identification requirements and registration procedures.
The increased participation could affect wait times at busy sites and the pace of campaign outreach in the final two weeks. It also makes accurate information about polling procedures especially important. TTN News will report updated totals as the state publishes new data and will distinguish votes cast from election results.
