Routh was assigned to District 1, covering a broad area of northern and western Guilford County. His patrol territory included Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Stokesdale and Browns Summit, along with unincorporated sections of Colfax and neighborhoods outside Greensboro's city limits. Those communities rely on county deputies for law-enforcement services beyond municipal police jurisdictions.
In a tribute reported by WXII, the sheriff's office described Routh as dependable and willing to volunteer for additional shifts. Supervisors trusted him with a take-home patrol vehicle, an arrangement the agency said was unusual for part-time deputies. The office also recalled that he carefully washed and maintained even older assigned vehicles, a small example of the pride he took in his duties.
The department's announcement emphasizes a form of public safety work that often happens away from major incidents: routine patrols, visibility in rural communities and the relationships built through repeated contact with residents. Routh joined the agency later in life, but his coworkers said his commitment left a lasting impression.
Routh is survived by his wife and family. As of Monday afternoon, officials had not publicly identified a cause of death or announced memorial arrangements. TTN News will update this report when the sheriff's office releases additional confirmed information. The circumstances of his death should not be inferred from the department's description of it as sudden.
