Greensboro is activating its Orange Flag overnight cooling center for Sunday, August 30, as the city continues responding to extreme summer heat.

The city’s Orange Flag program operates at the Interactive Resource Center, 407 E. Washington St. During an activation, the overnight center runs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and is available to people who need a place to get out of dangerous heat.

Greensboro says Orange Flag activations are used when daytime temperatures or the heat index reach at least 90 degrees and overnight temperatures are not expected to fall below 70 degrees.

The IRC is also serving as a weekend daytime cooling station from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday through the end of August. Those daytime hours operate independently of Orange Flag status.

City officials encourage residents to use cooling resources and take precautions during prolonged periods of high heat, particularly for people without reliable air conditioning or those spending extended time outdoors.
