A deadly cargo-plane crash in Miami has a direct Greensboro connection. A Boeing 767-300 freighter operated for Amazon by 21 Air, an airline headquartered in Greensboro, overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, Sept. 6, and struck vehicles beyond the airport boundary.
Authorities reported at least five deaths and five injuries. The aircraft had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The crash triggered a major emergency response and disrupted operations at one of the nation's busiest airports.
21 Air said it was devastated by the accident and is cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration and other authorities. Federal investigators are examining the landing sequence, including where the aircraft touched down, along with braking, speed, weather and mechanical factors.
No cause has been established. The Greensboro-based carrier's connection makes the investigation especially relevant to the Triad as federal officials continue gathering evidence.
