ASHEBORO, N.C. — Asheboro is under a state of emergency as crews work through widespread damage from severe storms that struck Randolph County over the weekend.
City officials said hundreds of trees came down and more than 40 streets were affected. More than 3,000 residents were without power Saturday night, and utility crews from Duke Energy and Randolph Electric have been working alongside local crews to clear roads and restore service.
Randolph County Emergency Services handled a surge of storm-related calls as the storms moved through Saturday. Spectrum News reported the county's 911 center answered 276 calls between 3 and 4 p.m. alone, averaging more than four calls per minute.
Officials said some customers could remain without electricity for an extended period while damaged poles and power lines are replaced. Residents are being urged to avoid downed lines and blocked roads while cleanup continues.
Randolph County is also asking homeowners and business owners with storm-related property damage to submit reports to help emergency management document the scope of the impact. Reporting damage does not guarantee financial assistance, but the information helps local and state officials assess recovery needs.
No serious injuries had been reported in the cleanup coverage reviewed by TTN News as of Monday morning. Damage assessments and power restoration remain ongoing.
