BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State returns to Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday for a sold-out Homecoming matchup against Old Dominion, opening Sun Belt Conference play in a game that also celebrates one of the Mountaineers' most memorable championship teams.

Kickoff was scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+. App State entered the contest 3-1 overall after defeating Maine, East Carolina and Charlotte, then losing 41-31 at NC State on September 26. The Mountaineers had an open date last weekend, giving head coach Dowell Loggains and his staff additional time to prepare for the Monarchs.

Old Dominion entered 1-4 overall and 0-2 in Sun Belt play. The Monarchs opened their league schedule with a 46-20 home loss to James Madison, then fell 42-10 at Georgia State. App State's official preview identified pass protection and offensive consistency as major challenges for the visitors, who had allowed 25 sacks and averaged 258.4 yards of offense per game entering Saturday.

App State's own offense has produced explosive passing plays behind quarterback Malachi Singleton. Through four games, Singleton averaged 301.5 passing yards and 24 completions per game, completing 72.7 percent of his attempts. Those figures placed him among national leaders and at the top of the Sun Belt in several passing categories entering the matchup.

The Mountaineers also had 73 offensive plays of at least 10 yards and 25 of at least 20 yards before their bye week, according to the school's game preview. Their rushing attack averaged 4.2 yards per carry with 10 touchdowns, while coaches continued to distribute carries among several backs. Balancing that explosiveness with consistent rushing production remains a storyline as league play begins.

Saturday's event also marks the 20th anniversary celebration of App State's 2006 national championship team. That squad went 14-1 and won the second of three consecutive FCS national titles under coach Jerry Moore. Freshman quarterback Armanti Edwards helped lead the 2006 team through a 13-0 finish after a season-opening loss to NC State.

The atmosphere at The Rock should reflect that history. Appalachian State announced that both its October 10 game against Old Dominion and its October 22 home game against James Madison had sold out. At the time of that announcement, the Mountaineers had sold out 19 of their previous 21 home games, underscoring the program's sustained support in Boone.

The matchup carries immediate conference significance because it is App State's first Sun Belt game of the season while Old Dominion is seeking its first league win. The next contest for the Mountaineers is a Friday-night trip to Coastal Carolina on October 16.
