GREENVILLE, N.C. — App State stayed unbeaten Saturday with a 27-24 road victory over East Carolina, giving the Mountaineers four consecutive wins in the FBS series with the Pirates.
App State built a 24-10 lead early in the second half and carried a 27-17 advantage into the closing seconds. East Carolina scored with 21 seconds remaining, but the ensuing onside kick went out toward the Pirates’ sideline without being recovered, allowing the Mountaineers to close out the win.
Quarterback Malachi Singleton completed 20 of 28 passes for 267 yards and added a four-yard rushing touchdown. Jaquari Lewis ran for 73 yards and a score, while Treyaun Webb also reached the end zone.
The Mountaineers made several important defensive plays. Caleb Sandstrom recorded two sacks and forced a turnover that helped set up a short-field touchdown, while Dre Walker intercepted an ECU pass in the final three minutes with the Pirates threatening to rally.
App State improved to 2-0 and is now 4-0 against East Carolina since the programs began their current FBS series. The Mountaineers return to Boone to host Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m.
